Chakras:
The concept of chakra originates in Hindu texts, featured in tantric and yogic traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism. Its name is derived from the Sanskrit word for “wheel” or “turning”.
According to traditional Indian medicine, Chakras are wheel-like vortices that are believed to exist in the surface of the subtle body of living beings. Chakras are said to be “force centers” or whorls of energy permeating from points on the physical body in a never ceasing fan-like rotation. Swirling vortices of subtle matter, they are considered the focal points for the reception and transmission of energies.
When a chakra is functioning well and spinning without any sluggishness, distortion or obstructions, it wont cause any physical, emotional or mental problems. If, however, a chakra is not functioning correctly these issues will soon become apparent.
Nadis are a network of fine lines that are essentially what the aura is made of, and chakras are located at the joining of many of these lines of energy. The seven major chakras reside at the intersection of the most number of lines, every major chakra is linked to a different part of the body, time of physical development and color.
Chakras manage certain areas of the body, along with the emotions, mentality and spiritual purpose connected with that part of the body. They also allow us to use our psychic abilities and connect with one another psychically.
Different systems posit a varying number of chakras; the most well known system in the West is that of the seven chakras. Along with the seven layers in an aura, there are seven major chakras, twenty-one minor chakras and four higher chakras. More are still being discovered.
Chakras are described as energy centers along the spine located at major branching’s of the human nervous system, beginning at the base of the spinal column and moving upward to the top of the skull, through which, believers assert, pass three major energy channels, Sushumna, Ida and Pingala.
Chakras are considered to be a point or nexus of biophysical energy or prana of the human body. Shumsky asserts that “prana is the basic component of your subtle body, your energy field, and the entire chakra system…the key to life and source of energy in the universe.”
